In 1913, the City of Bristol purchased a privately owned company and created the Bristol Water Department. In 2018, a City Charter Revision united the Water and Sewer Departments because of similarities between the two, forming the Bristol Water and Sewer Department. The department consists of two divisions Water and Sewer which are broken down to 6 Sections - Administrative, Construction, Sewer Collection, Metering, Sewer Treatment and Water Treatment. The Department has 60 full time employees dedicated to providing water and sewer service to the City’s 60,000 residents - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It is operated by a Board of Water Commissioners consisting of five members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council for overlapping terms of three years. The Board collectively oversees the operation of the department which is managed by the Superintendent.
The public is invited to attend the department's Board meetings at 6:00 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Water Treatment Plant, 1080 Terryville Avenue, Bristol, CT.
The Bristol Water and Sewer Department receives no revenues from City property taxes, operating solely on funds generated from rates and service charges. In accordance with the provisions of the City Ordinances, these funds are administered through an enterprise account, separate from the City of Bristol's General Fund.
