Zoning Enforcement
Responsibilities:
The Zoning Enforcement Officer (ZEO) helps to maintain the integrity and character of your neighborhood. This includes residential, commercial, and industrial developments. This is accomplished by enforcing the Bristol Zoning Regulations & the City Ordinances regarding blight throughout the city. Zoning is associated with the Building Department as much of what we do is related to the issuance of building permits. Connecticut law requires that certain projects must comply with the local zoning regulations prior to the issuance of a building permit.
The ZEO enforces the local regulations that apply to developments, site plans, structures, signs, fences, and the many other components of zoning. Generally, zoning permits are required before any construction, reconstruction, extension, enlargement, moving, or the altering of any building or other structure, as well as prior to the use or occupancy of any land, building, or other structure.
The ZEO is the staff liaison to the Bristol Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals. The Zoning Enforcement Office is located in the Building Department, second floor of City Hall. Hours of operation, Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 4:00pm.
