RESPONSIBILITIES
Welcome to the Bristol Tax Office. The Tax Collector’s Office has the responsibility of collecting revenue generated from the annual Grand List which consists of Real Estate, Motor Vehicle, and Personal Property taxes. Department responsibilities and procedures are strictly governed by the Connecticut General Statutes in conjunction with the Office of Policy and Management and the City ordinances. Balancing the need to maintain a high rate of collection with the sensitivity necessary to deal with individual taxpayer issues, especially in difficult economic times, is an integral function of the department.
NEW: DMV no longer accepts paper clearances. If you fail to pay your taxes on time and allow them to become delinquent, it will take between 48 and 72 hours for your name to be cleared at DMV via electronic file. You will NOT be able to register/renew on the same day you pay delinquent taxes. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE TO PAY YOUR DELINQUENT TAXES. PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY!
SPECIFICALLY: A list of people who pay with cash by noon will be submitted to DMV via electronic file that evening and will be cleared to register the next business day. If you pay after noon, or any time of day with a credit card, you will be cleared to register at least 48 hours later. ***
***Of course, if you pay with a credit card on Friday, you will not be able to conduct business at DMV until Tuesday.
Whether you pay electronically or with a paper check, if your payment is returned unpaid by the bank, you will be charged a $20 returned payment fee.
If your vehicle was sold, stolen, totaled, or you are being billed for property you no longer own, please visit the Assessor’s Office. You may be entitled to a refund or adjustment to your bill.
For Water/Sewer information, please call the Water Department at 860-582-7431.
